Boat sells its affordable audio and wearable products in the country and this data breach report is an alarming read for millions of its customers.
Boat has finally spoken about the recent data breach reports and confirmed it is looking into the matter and has launched its investigation. The company claims safeguarding its customer data is the top priority and will be doing everything in its power to ensure its customers do not suffer because of the alleged data breach that was pointed out in a media report this week.
“boAt is aware of recent claims regarding a potential data leak involving customer information,” a company spokesperson was quoted saying by IANS. The company said that it took these claims seriously and immediately launched a comprehensive investigation. “At boAt, safeguarding customer data is our top priority,” the spokesperson added in the post.
Boat from India reportedly faced a major breach that affects more than 7 million customers of the audio company. Media reports pointed out that personal details like names, email addresses, phone numbers, and even their residential addresses have been exposed.
It also mentions the data breach happened on April 5, 2024, by a hacker named ‘ShopifyGUY’ who claims to have dumped more than 2GB of Boat customer data and was made available on the dark web.
The worrying aspect of the data breach is that the hacker claims to be ready to sell it for as low as EUR 2 (Rs 180 approx) which makes it easily accessible to any bad actor and eventually we might even see the database available for free on other dark web and social media forums in the days to come.
Boat is one of the top selling brands in the affordable audio segment, which has catapulted the brand to the top of the global charts in the last few years. Incidents like these will surely get people worried, so it is imperative that Boat not only looks into the matter, but also comes out with its findings and shares it publicly which would be the right thing to do.
