Tech Mahindra teaches AI skills to 8,000 employees: 5 things to know

In a time when interest around artificial intelligence (AI) seems to be dominating the tech world, Tech Mahindra took a significant step towards shaping the future of its workforce. The company, as per reports, has trained around 8,000 employees in AI in order to prepare them better for the future.

Ever since OpenAI launched ChatGPT in November last year, people are more curious about AI and various companies have started using the technology in their day-to-day operations. Even though AI isn’t really a new concept, the spike in interest about the subject surely came from ChatGPT’s popularity. And now that Tech Mahindra has taught thousands of its employees to stay ahead of the curve using AI, we can only wonder what the future has in store.

Here are five thins to know about this latest move:

  1. Company’s focus: The company’s global chief people officer and head of marketing, Harshvendra Soin, said that the company focusing on BFSI, healthcare, manufacturing and retail sectors in geographies like the USA.
  2. Investing in employees: Soin added that the company will continue investing in employees so that the talent pool that they have is future-proof and resilient. “We have trained and upskilled around 8,000 employees in generative AI and other AI platforms in the June 2023 quarter,” he said.
  3. Change the way we work: Soin also said how generative AI has emerged as the next ‘big thing’ in the industry and will change the way we work, communicate and  create content. “This swift transition has also triggered substantial shifts in the skills demand, pushing companies to re-skill and upskill employees through various learning tools and platforms,” he added.
  4. Fall in net profit: The move comes after Tech Mahindra recorded a fall in net profits in April-June quarter. The company’s net profit fell by 36 per cent.
  5. CEO’S remarks: The company’s CEO and Managing Director C P Gurnani, who will retire later this year, said that this was the toughest quarter that he had seen in the last five years. He, however, was hopeful about generative AI, quantum computing and cybersecurity being the growth drivers of the company.

As more and more companies embrace AI, there is no doubt that in the future, the emerging tech will be a part of our lives at an even greater scale. And as time passes by, demand for people with knowledge of AI is also expected to increase. There are already various job postings on LinkedIn that asks people to have some level of AI expertise.
