Apple Safari wants you to stop bookmarking websites, instead offers a way to turn them into instant web apps

Apple held its annual event, the WWDC on June 5 this year and tech enthusiasts from across the world had their eyes glued to their screens in order to find out what the tech giant has in store for its customers. While the Vision Pro, new Mac Pro with Apple Silicon, iOS 17 and other big announcements were made at the event, Apple didn’t neglect its web browser, Safari. New features for Safari were announced at the event including one where users will be able to turn their favourite websites into instant apps that can be easily accessed from the Dock.

Apple unveils new Safari features at WWDC 2023

Apple’s new feature is similar to what Google’s Chrome offers as ‘Shortcuts’. By creating a shortcut, you can directly visit the webpage from your desktop.

In Apple’s Safari, when a user turns a website into an application, it will be available straight from the Dock and all the user needs to do will be to click on the icon to access the website in the form of an instant web application. Gone are the days when the only way to keep track of a website so that you don’t lose it on your Mac was to bookmark it. With the upcoming feature, users will get access to their favourite websites much faster.

Turning websites into apps was not the only feature announced for Safari. Apple also announced that users will soon be able to create profiles, to keep their browsing data separate for work and personal use.

“Keep your browsing separate for topics like Work and Personal with different profiles in Safari. Profiles help you separate your history, extensions, Tab Groups, cookies, and favorites. You can quickly switch between profiles as you browse,” Apple said in a press release.

The company also claimed that Safari search results are also getting an upgrade and will be ‘more responsive than ever and will show easier-to-read and more relevant suggestions’.

New MacOS unveiled at WWDC 2023

A whole new MacOS was announced at the WWDC 2023. Called Sonoma, the OS will be rolled out later this year. With Sonoma, users will be able to put widgets on their Macbook’s desktop for quick and easy access. The widgets can also be accessed from the desktop directly, without the need of opening the application. This way, it will be possible for the users to multitask on their devices. Apple also said that users will be able to add their iPhone widgets to their Macbook’s desktop as well without the need of installing the corresponding apps on the Mac.

Apple also introduced new screensavers that can become wallpapers when a user logs in on their Macbook. “New slow-motion screen savers of breathtaking locations from around the world look beautiful on your large Mac display,” the company said in a press release.

New video conferencing, screen sharing, and privacy features were also announced.
