Some Twitter employees have refused to sign the pledge to work form sent by Musk and decided to leave with severance pay.
By Ankita Chakravarti: Twitter chief Elon Musk’s email to employees about long working hours at high intensity was not received well. Some employees have refused to sign the pledge to work form sent by Musk and decided to leave with severance pay. Musk has proposed in the letter that the employees who refuse to abide by the company’s new rules can leave with severance pay. Twitter has now closed its offices and disabled badge access until November 21. No other information has been shared with the employees as of now.
Why are Twitter employees leaving?
The employees decided to leave after Musk sent an email titled Ä fork in the road”on Wednesday. In the email, Musk ordered the employees to sign an online form by 3:30 AM IST today committing to “long hours at high intensity.” “If you are sure that you want to be part of the new Twitter, please click yes on the link below,” the email read. Musk also mentioned that Twitter will need to be extremely hardcore, which means the employees will have to work long hours at high intensity.
Soon after the employees decided to leave with severance pay, Twitter sent an email saying that it would shut offices temporarily and disable badge access until November 21.
As per a Guardian report, Musk did not anticipate the number of employees who would refuse to sign the pledge to work form and leave with severance pay. He was reportedly meeting some top executives convincing them to stay.
Before Musk acquired Twitter, the company had close to 7500 employees but the workforce was slashed by almost 50 per cent during the mass layoffs. Now, with more employees leaving the company, Twitter will shrink by a whopping 88 per cent. The final attrition result is yet to be seen.
How many employees have left so far?
The exact figure of Twitter employees resigning after Musk’s email is not known, but it has been reported that the numbers are in the hundreds. Some of the very old, reliable employees who have spent more than 10 years in the company have also resigned. Twitter’s DM of engineering also announced on Twitter his resignation.
Elon Musk’s email that sparked mass resignations
Musk had sent the email to the Twitter employees at midnight. In the email, Musk said that Twitter “will need to be extremely hardcore”. “This will mean working long hours at high intensity,” he said. “Only exceptional performance will constitute a passing grade.” Musk had previously ended the work from home regime for the Twitter employees. He even asked the employees to at least spend 40 hours a week. “The road ahead is arduous and will require intense work to succeed,” Musk said in his previous email to the employees.
Musk had ended the “days of rest”holidays for Twitter employees soon after he acquired the company.
